Building regulations set the bar for energy efficiency, setting out minimum standards for the performance of new homes. However, these are minimum standards and can easily be exceeded.
For those looking for higher performance standards, the Code for Sustainable Homes provides useful additional insight. Although not mandatory and, indeed, no longer part of the Government’s plan for improving the quality of new build, the Code is still widely recognised as a measure of both energy efficiency and sustainable development.
The Code included several levels of performance: Code Level 3 is essentially equitable to current Building Regulations. Code 6 is essentially zero carbon. Any performance above Code Level 3 is a very energy efficient home.
One of the reasons that the Code was abandoned by Government was the perceived cost and complexity of building to the higher levels of the Code. At H+H we wanted to prove that it was possible to achieve Code Level 4 without relying on renewable energy sources (such as Solar PV or heat pumps) and were therefore delighted to participate in in the AIMC4 project which set out to prove just that.
The consortium provided a unique collaboration between developers Stewart Milne Group, Crest Nicholson Plc and Baratt Developments Plc together with H+H UK Ltd and the Building Research Establishment.
Using funding from the Technology Strategy Board, the consortium constructed twelve world-class energy efficient innovative homes that achieved Level 4 through the design of the building fabric and primary building services alone. A range of construction methods was included in the study, including H+H’s Thin-Joint system.
H+H’s contribution to the project was based on out technical knowledge, both of our own products and the construction industry as a whole.
