A Primary School with a difference
H+H UK Ltd Hi-Strength Grade 100mm and 140mm aircrete blocks have been specified for a £1.7 million project at Batheaston Primary School in Bath. The blocks have been used to build a new hall, reception, classrooms and a kitchen facility with the aim of the project to achieve U values 25% better than the current Building regulation requirements for walls.
CMS Bath Ltd was appointed to complete the detail design. Richard Helliar, the architectural technologist leading the project explains: ‘The u value of 0.26W/m2K was achieved using H+H aircrete blockwork with 100mm Rockwool cavity fill for external walls. BREEAM assessment is also being carried out and aims to achieve a 'Good' rating. We are extremely pleased with these results.’
The blockwork was carried out by H Mealing and Sons; as Director Glen Penhey explains: ‘H+H is a sustainable manufacturer with high quality products, making them the ideal choice for the project. The blocks were also chosen for their light weight, resulting in a very quick construction.”
Batheaston is a ‘Green Flag’ awarded primary school and is part of the international ‘Eco-Schools’ programme guiding educational establishments towards sustainability by working various green principles into the everyday running of the school.
The school is heavily involved with conservation and sustainability and this is reflected in the recent changes at the school. Bearing this in mind H+H was an ideal partner as the company shares these commitments to sustainable production and operation.
Developments at Batheaston Primary School began in July 2010 and the project was completed in September 2011. Further developments taking place include an area for wildlife and a straw bale building for additional teaching space.
