When supporting a solid external wall, the foundations can also use a solid block approach. Requiring only a single leaf of blocks, the Celcon Foundation Block can be laid onto a strip of poured concrete to match the thickness of the wall. This method requires no mortar at the perpendicular joints; instead the blocks are butted against each other.
Celcon Foundation Blocks are available in sizes to suit the wall above. When used with an external cavity wall, typically 300mm wide, a single aircrete block can replace two 100mm concrete blocks, giving aircrete twice the laying rate of a traditional alterative.
The nature of the aircrete material makes Celcon Foundation Blocks resistant to the effects of freeze/thaw conditions and also to sulphate attack. BBA testing and assessment shows that aircrete is suitable for use across all applications where high sulphate levels are likely to be encountered.
Lighweight and easy to work on site, aircrete provides many practical advantages, while a recent cost-comparison study carried out by independent consultants Calfordseaden demonstrated a cost saving of 23% and 26% for cavity and solid foundations respectively when compared with a dense aggregate block alternative.
