H+H Further Recognition for Energy Efficiency

H+H UK has recently become one of the first manufacturers in the UK to be awarded BSEN 16001 – the latest European standard to focus specifically on energy efficiency and also the British Standards Institute Energy Reduction Validation (ERV) Kitemark scheme for demonstrating reductions in carbon emissions.

To meet the requirements of the standard, H+H implemented a formal system for managing energy usage across its business and for ERV Kitemark scheme compliance had to further demonstrate a commitment to reducing energy use year-on-year over the preceding three year period, using a robust method of calculation to back up the figures. The requirement for ERV compliance is to demonstrate a minimum 2.5% carbon reduction by H+H actually achieved a 7.5% reduction for 2009/2010 compared to the preceding two years.

“We believe that this standard and ERV compliance provide the most precise focus on energy efficiency,” sums up H+H’s Project Manager Gary Thwaites. “At H+H our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions is not in doubt, and we decided that this European wide standard provided the most comprehensive and effective process for evaluating and demonstrating the effectiveness of our energy policy.”

It has been a core policy for H+H over recent years to improve its energy efficiency and position itself securely in line with sustainable building practices. This clearly makes commercial sense: 75% of the 500 building industry professionals who responded to a recent H+H poll stated that they would aim to build more sustainably even if there were no legislation requiring them to do so.

The newest standard is just the latest in a series that bear testimony to the commitment of H+H to sustainability. This impressive list has included: The first manufacturer in the industry to achieve certification to the Carbon Trust Standard; and Environmental Managemeent System (EMS) complying with ISO 14011 at all manufacturing site; a top ten ranking in the Sunday Times Green Best Green Companies listing plus, in September 2009 H+H was awarded VERY GOOD for all products under the BES6001:2008 Responsible Sourcing initiative from the BRE, being the first company to be awarded Very Good on all sites and for all products.
