Pallet Recycling "On The Up"

In 2009 H+H joined the repatriation initiative, one of the first manufacturers to do so. Since then the number of pallets collected has increased dramatically:

2009 – 6,531
2010 – 21,509
2011 – 96,062

This year collections are on course to break the 100,000 mark. Already, 23,851 were repatriated in the first 2 months of 2012, an increase of over 84% compared with the same period last year.

For 2011 H+H reclaimed 44% of returned pallets from house builders, 44% from national builders’ merchant chains and the other 12% from other independent merchants and contractors.

The scheme is part of an industry-wide packaging reduction initiative and is supported by the Construction Products Association, WRAP and the Building Research Establishment.

H+H introduced the scheme as waste reduction is part of our ambitious programme to improve the company’s sustainability credentials. We already focus on energy efficiency and aim to cut carbon emissions every year. This commitment to the environment led to H+H appearing in the top 10 of the Sunday Times list of ‘Best Green Companies’ in 2010.

H+H Marketing Manager, Jenny Smith-Andrews says: “As with any successful initiative the key lies in its simplicity. Pallet collection is arranged though Scott ELM: all the site manager has to do is make a call and there is no charge to the customer. The question is, why wouldn’t you participate?

Provided a site or yard has a minimum of 30 pallets ready for collection, whether whole or damaged, Scott ELM will pick them up. The pallets are then returned to the Scott ELM depots where they are sorted and either repaired, recycled or used for spare parts.
